Like I said, there is so much to tell you when it comes to house sitting, but often people ask us these questions the most:
• What EXACTLY is house sitting?
• How did you get started? (See the previous post)
• Do you get paid?
• I want to do this! How do I get started?
What exactly is house sitting? House sitting, quite simply, is looking after a person’s home and belongings while they are away. There are different levels to this of course because there is much to take into consideration. For example, type of home, pets, animals, cars and the list goes on. Just think for a moment what you have to take care of in your home versus your friends and that will give you a little bit of an idea how different each one can be.
Whether it is a bungalow or a mansion, there is no foolproof way to know what you are getting into until you arrive. For example, the older home we stayed in had its’ quirks but the newly constructed home was so high tech I needed manuals to run the appliances. (read about it here in our Globe Squatter Stories.) You also have to take into consideration what animals or pets you are capable (and willing) to care for while you are there.
Then, of course, there is the location and transportation. Where do you want to house sit? If your flying do you need to rent a car or are the homeowners willing to lend you one? If they are what else needs to be taken into consideration? Maybe you plan on taking house sits close to a city or perhaps you prefer to be out in the country somewhere?
